Dueling Statistics: Chrome vs. Internet Explorer

Two sources support wildly different claims (WSJ reports)

Stat Counter, a company that tracks browser market share just declared that Google’s Chrome had edged past Microsoft’s Internet Explorer as the leading Web browser. Microsoft points to statistics from another company, Net Applications, to show it is not so. Of course the two companies are counting very differently. Who’s right?

  • Stat Counter counts actual page views
  • Net Applications aggregates clicks to tease out a count of unique visitors
  • Both companies attempt to exclude web bots and other non-human visitors
  • Stat Counter presents its counts without other adjustment
  • Net Applications weights its counts to match national statistics published by the CIA

Is Net Applications cooking the books or making valid adjustments for statistical error?
